NorSun
NorSun is a Norwegian solar energy company that produces highly efficient monocrystalline silicon wafers for the global solar energy industry.
Building blocks for the world’s solar panels
NorSun produces high-performance n-type wafers, and is an established supplier to several of the world’s leading solar cell manufacturers. It is in fact the leading supplier of this type of parts for solar cells outside of Asia.
The company was established in 2005 and operates a state-of-the-art production facility in Årdal, Norway that has a capacity of 500 MW per year. The plan is to double production to 1 GW during the first half of 2021.
Potential for new value chains
Together with other renewable energy sources, solar energy plays a key role in the decarbonization of world energy production.
The market for solar energy is growing rapidly, and since 2015 the installation of solar power has increased by eightfold in Norway. The majority of the solar industry value chains are currently located in Asia, and especially in China. However, there is an increasing interest in building value chains in Europe, and NorSun will play a key role. The main focus will be on product quality and the overall CO2 footprint in production.
Unique market position
Norsun is one of the few wafer manufacturers that has survived the competition from China. By using premium polysilicon in combination with world-leading technology, NorSun offers wafers with a very low CO2 footprint. The production plant in Årdal is operated with electricity from hydropower, and the company also use new technology to reduce waste, reuse raw materials and utilize the nearby Årdalsvatnet for natural cooling.
Purchasing schemes in several markets emphasize a low carbon footprint, and more and more private customers are conscious about climate-friendly solutions. NorSun’s demonstrated ability to produce with low CO2 emissions give them a clear competitive advantage.
Through its unique technological and climate-friendly position, NorSun has secured supply agreements with several of the world’s leading manufacturers in the solar industry.
